Homeschool High School Art

Homeschool Art for High School Students

By The McEvoy Atelier of Drawing & Painting
In addition to our passion for creating art, our team at the McEvoy Atelier is seasoned in experience with the homeschool world, as several of our staff are themselves parents of homeschool students, while Kevin himself was homeschooled as a young child for a period when his parents lived in Europe. Accordingly, we have designed a course that springs from an in depth understanding of the needs of homeschool students and parents.

Our curriculum is unique in that it is designed to teach 9 years to adults. There is no nudity, (and no outbound links) so parents can feel free to let their children learn the classical atelier method without the worry of them seeing anything their parents feel that they are not ready for 😉

Our Courses are specifically designed with Homeschool Students in mind, as all courses are formatted for independent learning. Every thirty minutes of on screen video instruction is paired with two hours of off screen student activity, with times depending on the students ability, speed and level of art instruction involved.

  12. Lastly, you will pick two items from your kitchen pantry to draw from life, so that you can put these skills into practice.

Each lesson consists of:

  1. Watch: Each lesson begins with an instructional video demonstrating the concept being taught. Leading by example, Kevin draws the concept out for you to see while also explaining the reasoning, vocabulary and concepts behind the method.
  2. Art History : Many lessons have art history lessons interwoven into the instruction, and so an Art History Reference page is provided for you to remember all the artists and images. This is intended to give you the context for the concept being taught, in order to provide a well rounded understanding as well as to help you develop.
  3. Vocabulary: Each lesson either introduces new vocabulary, or refers to vocabulary used in prior lessons.
  4. Activity: At the end of each lesson an activity is presented for you to practice what you have just learned. The activity should take longer than the video length of the lessons I offer. Each activity can take from twenty minutes to two hours.

Start with: Foundations of Drawing  (Below is Suggested Schedule)

What Will I need To Start?

A Pencil, Paper, Eraser and Sharpener. Thats it. Just Start with what you have on hand and as you develop as an artist get more supplies.

Suggested Weekly Schedule

  • Day 1: Watch the video lesson and review the art references
  • Days 2-4: Work on the activity at the end of the lesson for 30 to 60 minutes per day
  • Ask any questions on the weekly Q&A on the private Facebook page, the McEvoy Atelier.

What Do Artists Need?
The basis of all art requires the ability to draw. What is the ability to draw, though? To learn to draw is to learn to see.

When do I begin to paint?
When building a home, it would be unthinkable to attempt to paint the walls of the house before the foundation has even been poured. Likewise, we must learn the foundations of drawing, before picking up our brushes.

Who can take these courses?
Any artist, at any level, ages 9 and up can take advantage of the courses offered here and move through them at their own pace. We offer individual art instruction in a low pressure format, where they can review the video instruction over and over when necessary.

Where do I start?

Additional Services for Individual Students:

  • Private Critiques, in which art work is evaluated and then given constructive critique, to point student in a beneficial direction. Click here to learn more
  • Join in on our Feedback Friday Session on the McEvoy Atelier Facebook page, a weekly event in which artists from all ages and backgrounds tune in. Artists can either have their work critiqued in front of the group, or can simply watch to learn as others have their works critiqued
  • Downloadable Homeschool Schedules available to assist in setting up curriculum
  • IHIP information to receive High School Fine Art Credit

Additional Services Available for Homeschool Groups:

We offer Homeschool Groups the ability to take our courses as a group, in a classroom format. Groups progress through courses in the sequence prescribed for all students, beginning with Foundations. With this group structure, groups of students move through the courses together.

In addition to the option for students to schedule private critiques of their own work,  each Homeschool Group can schedule a biweekly or monthly Facebook Feedback session, in which the students have the opportunity to log on, upload their work, and have Kevin critique and discuss the works of different students. Sometimes, Kevin will also play the fiddle 😉
