Art comes naturally to most children, they start drawing or scribbling at a very young age. Once we start homeschooling we wonder just how to add art into our homeschool life. 1) Have art materials out so your children can use when they are in the mood to play and create. Wonderful beginner supplies: Crayons, Pencils, Colored Pencils, Watercolors, Watercolor Pencils & Crayons, Markers, Acrylic Paint, Oil Paint. > More Info
2) Expose your children to beautiful book illustrations. When you choose a book for read aloud or for their personal reading time choose books that have beautiful illustrations. This will engage and encourage children to add artwork to their stories. > More Info
3) Write/Draw A Picture Book -My kids love writing their own books even at a young age your child could narrate to you the story and you could write it down and then they could draw pictures to go along with it. If they’re older they could write the story and draw, and make it into a book themselves. Older children love comic books or graphic novels. > More Info
4) Nature Journaling -Go Outside and draw, explore nature with a sketchbook and pencil and simply draw what you find. A leaf, pinecone cool bug, the clouds and flowers. Do some nature studies. This is Observational Art, which can be used in conjunction with Observational Science and Non-Fiction Writing. > More Info
5) Art Museums -Visit art museums. There is something about seeing a piece of art in person and coming to understand that the artist sat and painted and worked however long and fished it and her it is hanging up on a wall fro me to appreciate. Then whichever piece your children like, research that particular artist. Don’t worry if the art museums in your area are small, smaller is better, large museums are overwhelming for most people. > More Info
6) Art History Books-Get a few art history books. There are some that start for very young children and go all the way up to college level. In art sometimes their is nudity so if you go to the children’s section of the library you can get ones that a..Below is a list of some suggested art history books- then you can draw or paint in a similar manner as the artist. > More Info
7) Follow Your Child’s Interests -Does your child love to draw dinosaurs or fairies princesses, cars or bugs? Get them step by step drawing books based on their interests. This helps them learn that there is a step by step method of learning to draw with is exactly what the classical method of drawing is. When they get a bit older (middle school) then they are able to use the skills step by step drawing into their art more easily. > More Info
8) Still Life Drawing -Around middle school your child will have the fine motor skills developed to start to learn classical drawing methods. An easy way to incorporate is to place some objects in the middle of a table and have them draw what they see. > More Info
9) Art Through History -Wherever you are in your history curriculum find art pieces from that time period. > More Info
10) Art Through Science -Art and science go together intrinsically. You observe and write nots and draw whatever it is you are observing.

Why Us: At the McEvoy Atelier Children learn to draw WHAT THEY SEE FIRST, THEN FROM THEIR IMAGINATION. This step is like when you first teach your children how to write a sentence, they earn sentence structure FIRST, then they go onto write a sentence from their imagination. Once the children have certain SKILLS then you let them loose to create whatever they want. First FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS then Creativity and imagination. In teaching children to write we use basic concepts but when teaching art most people NEVER learn the basic building blocks on how to draw and paint. Most people would call that this “Classical Method of Art”, and it is a method. Just like every child can learnt o read and write. Every child CAN learn to draw. Just like in reading we learn the Alphabet in Classical drawing method our alphabet is (shape, shadow, light, contour line, etc)

TYPE OF CURRICULUM (for those of you who love curriculum, I’ll explain our type of curriculum)
Our method is similar to Saxon Math in that we practice and practice so our student build up their muscle memory and gently build skill upon skill so our students don’t get frustrated and stop, but so they learn to master every skill. But our heart is Charlotte Mason, which is infused into every lesson, the joy of observing, the beauty around us, …take a walk, draw, breathe, appreciate, a poem in the background, with “Truth” seen as art and appreciated. Our skills and imaginations lifted up to glorify God in all we do even our artwork, especially our artwork. For God created us in His image..and He created..so we’re created to create! And in this process we glorify our Creator.
